Fine Arts students Paul Beima and Gabriella Ricci
present their senior thesis exhibition:
Ricci: I create installation-based sculptures that resemble organic forms made
out of transparent resin and plaster.
My intent is to have these forms relate to the systematic order of the
natural world. The inherent conflict in depicting the systems of the natural
world with synthetic materials is an integral theme in my work.
Beima: One of the most interesting dichotomies in the world is between
science and art. The science of optics says white light contain all colors, and
is therefore impure - thus only darkness, a complete absence of light, can be
considered pure. The opposite is true in art. Black pigment contains all colors,
while white, the symbol for purity in western culture, contains no other colors
aside from its own pure pigment. These paintings explore my visual
manifestation of this universal art-science phenomenon.
