Opening Reception September 30th 7pm to 10pm
On view until October 7th
"I’ve been working on the theme of a hero since the mid spring 2011 starting it intuitively or subconsciously, then developing it into more conscious ideas of a hero’s journey, relation of a hero to a crowd, an idea of a ‘world savior’, a martyr, a wise man, a guru, a star, a person who ‘has the answers’, who is expected to find solutions, who is “different”, or “crazy”, or “saint”, or whatever this list could be continued with. Examples could be endless: Jesus, Alexander the Great, Buddha, Joan of Ark, Picasso, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Curt Cobain, Lady Gaga, etc. They are real people, yet society gives them a special status. Examples could be much less obvious, and it could go as deep as the viewer would like it to. I use certain set of imagery that could create many possibilities for symbolism and interpretation. I believe that I paint ideas rather than real objects, and that’s how the paintings open up for interpretations. In the end, I want the viewers to be the heroes, and decide what those works mean to them.
Specially for the exhibition I asked Ringling experimental video club MANA to collaborate on creating a video, and a space in the gallery." - Makar Malinouski
